Antigone Extra Credit

We are offering extra credit to students who attend the Cy Woods Theater Company's production of Antigone. Shows are November 3-6. If you have a concern about purchasing a ticket, please have a private conversation with Ms. Gillihan or Mr. Kent.

To earn the five bonus points on a major grade, you MUST:
  1. Attend the production. Your ticket stub/receipt will be attached to your essay as proof of your attendance. If you are a member of the cast/crew, a playbill will be sufficient to prove your attendance. IF YOU DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR TICKET STUB/RECEIPT, YOUR ASSIGNMENT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR THE EXTRA CREDIT.
  2. Write a one-page MINIMUM (front only), HANDWRITTEN essay that addresses the following:
    • A brief summary of the story of Antigone
    • How the theater company's adaptation shows Greek values that we discussed in class (provide specific examples from both the play and our class discussions/reading notes)
    • How the theater company's adaption does NOT stay true to Greek values/historY (you can discuss historical inaccuracies, different time periods addressed by the play, and any contradictions you see with specific facts that we learned in class)
    • Why you think the theater company chose to set the play in a different era than Classical Greece
**Essays less than ONE FULL PAGE will not be considered for the extra credit. The final essay and your ticket stub will be due Friday, November 10th. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED!

This video will be shown to newcomers at every note-taking tutorial, so if you want to get a step ahead (or if you can't make it to tutoring), watch this video! It gives some good ideas on how to take notes in a way that ensures you are PROCESSING the information, not just copying it down with no understanding. It also has some great suggestions for visual learners.

Note-taking tutorials will continue through Friday, 9/22!

Welcome to WHAP!

Welcome to World History AP (WHAP)! We are so excited to have you in class this year. You are the best of the best, and we're lucky to be your teachers! Despite what you've heard, WHAP is a very manageable course...you just have to stay on top of things and ask us for help whenever you need it!

The most important thing we want to emphasize to you is that we are not behind, playing catch-up, or in a rush, so PLEASE DO NOT STRESS! :) Right now, we understand that many of you have priorities with your family related to Hurricane Harvey, and we respect and support you in this. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your teacher if you are in need of help or have ANY kind of concern. We are here for you, and the safety and well-being (both physical and mental!) of you and your family are our utmost priority!

For your first couple of homework assignments, you'll be utilizing some of the links in the top right-hand corner. You can always double-check your homework or upcoming assignments by scrolling to the bottom of the page and viewing the calendar. Please be aware that you may need to actually click on the assignment and expand it to see the full extent of the assignment. Let us know if you have questions!

Your first reading quiz is scheduled for September 22nd. If you keep up with the pages as we assign them, it's not hard to stay on top of things! To help you do this, we have scanned PDFs of the first set of reading pages since you don't have access to your online textbook quite yet. Here are the links where you can find the PDFs. If you are in need of hard copies, these can be printed in the library, or you can ask your teacher for a set! Remember, your notes must be in your own handwriting and must be taken in the 3rd section of your 5-subject spiral notebook.

Pages 19-24: http://cwwh.wikispaces.com/file/detail/WHAP+p.+19-24.pdf
Pages 45, 48-52: http://cwwh.wikispaces.com/file/detail/WHAP+p.+45%2C+48-52.pdf
Pages 54-55: http://cwwh.wikispaces.com/file/detail/WHAP+p.54-55.pdf
Pages 62-68: http://cwwh.wikispaces.com/file/detail/WHAP+p.+62-68.pdf
Pages 86-91: http://cwwh.wikispaces.com/file/detail/WHAP+p.86-91.pdf

If you're worried about reading notes, come in and ask us for help! We'll be doing reading note tutorials each day after school for the first two weeks.

Looking forward to a great year, Wildcats!

Thursday and Friday MC Practice

On Thursday and Friday in the lab, we will be doing a practice multiple choice online using the link below:

http://barronsbooks.com/ap/worldhist/index.html

We recommend that you take the test in "practice mode," allowing you to take notes and check your answers as you go. You should read the question and answer by clicking on the choice you think is best. Then, you can click "show answer" at the bottom to see if you are right and read the explanation. We suggest that you takes notes over the explanation and use this as a content review and a practice test.

At the end of class on Thursday, you will need to write down the number you left off on. On Friday, you will reopen the test, but you will click on the button on the bottom left that says "Jump to Question" and pick the one you left off with on Thursday. Then, you will continue taking the test. If you finish early, please note that there is writing practice included in this online test as well. You could work on that if you finish early.

Helpful Review Resources

Hey there, WHAP warriors! It's that time of year when we have to begin thinking about how to prepare for the upcoming AP exam. You will receive a study packet in class in April, and we will also do lots of review activities and games in class. However, it is critical that you spend time outside of class studying if you want to earn a 3, 4, or 5. To that end, here are some helpful review resources. There are brief descriptions included for each so you can choose the ones that best target your areas that could use improvement. The ones we think are MOST valuable have an asterik (*) beside them. Most of these resources are free, but some require you to purchase them. Please understand that you are NOT required to purchase any outside materials, although we encourage you to if it's possible.

If you use any other resources that you find helpful, let us know and we can add it to the blog!
